Aspergers Syndrome – Information for parents seeking mental health treatment.
Asperger syndrome (AS), is often known as Asperger’s syndrome. It is treated as a mental health disorder by cognitive behaviour therapists. Asperger disorder (AD) or Asperger’s, is the same condition as High Functioning Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The therapy for Asperger’s may include specialist cognitive behaviour therapy from a psychologist or psychiatrist experienced with Autism-related conditions. The overall health and wellbeing of the patient with Asperger‘s Syndrome is of utmost importance during these clinical appointments.
About Asperger’s Syndrome.
Asperger’s Syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder. The cognitive condition is named after the Austrian psychiatrist Hans Asperger. Psycho-analyst Hans Asperger discovered the intellectual processing deficit in 1944.
Aspergers limits brains ability to process sensory information and communication with friends, parents or students at their school. Asperger’s Disorder can affect academic performance and social skills as a result. Overcoming ASD can be achieved. We help children, teenagers and adults at our Perth-based mental health clinic.
Diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome or Autism.
Asperger syndrome now comes under the neurodevelopmental term of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In order to simplify the diagnosis process, the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) now categorises Asperger Syndrome as High Functioning Autism. Australian doctors tend to refer to the World Health Organisation definition of Asperger’s Syndrome.
The Commonwealth Government of Australia defines Asperger’s as High Functioning Autism. The Australian Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) subsidies the cost of an Autism Diagnosis for Australian residents holding a Medicare Card. Focused Education’s experienced clinicians and therapists can help assess your child for Asperger’s.
Children with Asperger’s syndrome have similar characteristics:
- Delayed ability to make friends at school.
- Reduced social reasoning.
- Delayed speech and language (assessed by a speech therapist).
- Frequent meltdowns at Kindergarten or Primary School.

Asperger’s Syndrome can result in Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia.
It is common for toddlers or infants with signs of Autism to also show symptoms of a Specific Learning Difficulty. The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) describes Specific Learning Disability as specific academic challenges in reading, writing or mathematics occurring very early in a child’s first years of school.
