What is high functioning autism in children ?
If your child or student has High Functioning Autism in simple terms it means they have an IQ above 70 and experience the cognitive differences of Autism Spectrum Disorder, otherwise known as Asperger Syndrome. Young children with High Functioning Autism are often not diagnosed due to many teachers, parents and school psychologists not understanding the neurodevelopmental condition.
Is the diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome and high functioning autism similar?
Yes, Asperger Syndrome and ASD are effectively the same cognitive condition, and the diagnostic process is similar. The Psychological Board of Australia and the Educational and Developmental Psychologist Board(AHPRA) recommend using the DSM-5 definition of Autism.
Is my child stupid if they have high-functioning autism?
No, usually kids and teenagers diagnosed with High Functioning Autism have average or above-average intelligence. Character traits and symptoms are less obvious to parents and teacher than other types of autism. Most children with ASD have behavioural, social or academic problems at school from an early age. It is often misdiagnosed as ADHD. That’s why at Focused Education we have psychologists that specialise in both Autism and ADHD. It makes it a lot easier to diagnose Autism correctly.
Why does a child with High Functioning Autism not understand why I am grumpy?
Kids with Asperger Syndrome/High Functioning Autism find it difficult to make sense of other people’s behaviour and communication. Students in a classroom may find it difficult to detect when their school teacher is upset or grumpy. The classic example is a teacher that glares or stares at students to discipline them. Kids with Autism often comment that “the teacher is looking at me strangely”. High Functioning Autism results in a reduced cognitive ability to detect mental states of people by looking at their facial expressions.
What is Autism?
is a group of personality traits and cognitive differences that make people with ASD think and act differently. People without Autism may observe someone experiencing ASD as having some or all of the following traits:
- Difficulty making friends or a lack of social skills (social cognition problems)
- May become anxious in loud places.
- May misinterpret a conversation or comment
